Perhaps even more impressive than the stump in image DHJanzen100803.jpg, this remnant of a tree crown has also been lying on the forest floor for 40 years in the forest in image DHJanzen100801.jpg and DHJanzen100802.jpg above, and is still hard as a rock. It is clear why such wood was highly prized for outdoor construction. Note that it was cut with an axe rather than a chainsaw, which would have dated it in the 1970 or later period. In this particular case we know that it was cut in 1944-1945 by personal account of a member of the logging crew.
