Examination of the understory of the 40-year-old forest in image DHJanzen100801.jpg and DHJanzen100802.jpg above encounters stumps from the orginal dry forest trees, stumps that - though dead - have not yet rotted into oblivion after 40 years of insect and fungal attack. This, incidentally, reveals why some of these trees make good fenceposts. The blackened surface of this stump gives testimony to the occasional litter fire that has crept through this forest during past decades, before the ACG fire prevention program was in place. However, it is also clear that the litter fire frequency was not great enough to block gradual forest restoration (though it might have slowed it some).
