The view inside the young forest behind Winnie in image DHJanzen100798.jpg above (25 April 1999). Compare this with DHJanzen100792.jpg, which was taken in almost exactly the same place. In 1980 the view was virtually identical to that in 1972 (image DHJanzen100792.jpg above), so this is about 19 years of fire-free regeneration by natural processes. No trees were planted here (all the incoming saplings were, however, counted and mapped). At least 99% of the individual trees and species in this photograph are dispersed by wind (see below). This photograph was taken in the dry season because that is the time of maximum visibility (see DHJanzen100800.jpg below).
