The log rafts accumulate down river at the central mill of the African Timber and Plywood Company. Below each of these surface layers there are 1-3 more layers of logs. Each raft is numbered and registered. Here the logs wait until their turn comes, safe from wood-boring insects, perhaps for months to years. Here we are just a few km from the mouth of the river to the sea, a natural port for ocean-going vessels to come in for wood loads.
