The crown of the felled tree, like a giant broom falling on its head, smashes heavily into the understory plants and shade-suppressed saplings/seedlings. This tangle will have a very different history of tree regeneration than the non-impacted area around the stump. Also, it is commonplace for the canopy far above this tangle to be closed or semi-closed, on what amounts to the edge of the tiny clearly generated by cutting the tree.
