Here we are walking down a newly felled tree that is so large that the loggers wondered if they would even be able to get it out of the forest. In the end, it was cut into sections, and the sections removed one at a time. Note that the tree has been felled in intact forest, and is not adjacent to a road or other clearing. What is the anatomy of disturbance of a felled tree of this nature and felled in this way? At the stump, there is almost no disturbance at ground level, though clearly the stump will be in or near the hole created in the canopy far above. This means that the stump area will receive strong sunlight and seedlings there will have the easiest growth, if they can respond to this new resource. But the tree crown falls 30-40 m from the stump, at the tangle at the end of this log (see DHJanzen100737.jpg below).
