The ACG marine portion extends (see DHJanzen100083.jpg) 12 miles out to sea (to the territorial limit, in front of the original Parque Nacional Santa Rosa) and 6 km out to sea (along the Peninsula Santa Elena). This contains very diverse (for the eastern Pacific) coral reefs and relatively unfished waters. The strong currents and strong surface winds (mostly in the dry season) kept local fishermen relatively out of these waters, in contrast to the remainder of the Costa Rican Pacific coast, whose marine life has been heavily depleted (except for around Isla de Coco). These marine waters are currently (2001-onward) the subject of a complex effort to gradually wean the fishermen entirely out of the area.
