Here a blur of dung from a somewhat loose-boweled horse shows clearly the dispersed Enterolobium seeds that have been placed at this point in a seed shadow. Home free? Well, I had been planting Enterolobium seeds, each notched with a file to hasten germination, a cm deep in dry forest soils so as to study seedling survival. 5000 seeds set out in nice lines and patches through the forest, in nicely documented and defined places. Two days later the Liomys had gotten every one of them. A very effective seed predator, but not nice for the researcher. Brilliant idea. Hide the seeds in horse dung, which surely the mice would not want to stick their beautiful clean hands and pink noses into.
