Once ranging in huge herds over the Indian subcontinent, elephants were also major bamboo seed predators, passing through a bamboo seed crop by the hundreds. Considering that a zoo elephant can eat 300 pounds of food in a day, that is a lot of bamboo seeds. Incidentally, compare the skull shape of this Indian elephant with that of an African elephant, which by and large was never domesticated (except by Hannibal?).
