| A close view of the inside of a clump of bamboo reveals that the stems really are just grass stems, gigantic as they may be (actually different species of bamboo have stems ranging from just a cm or less in diameter to huge stems the diameter of your leg). And these woody stems have long been used by people for many, many uses, which is ironically why we understand at least parts of the bamboo story, even while human activity at clearing the landscape is a major reason why bamboo biology as a wild phenomenon has been largely eliminated. | ||
