This is a large adult clump of bamboo (in fact, a small clone), introduced from southeast Asia or even south China, growing in Costa Rica. Bamboo is just an enormous grass. But it is a very different gras for more than its large size. This photograph was taken in 1975, and if you were to return today, 2001, you could probably take the same photograph. And had you watched this clump all those years, perhaps by living below it, you could vouch for it never having flowered or fruited in all those years.
