On first glance, looking down on a tropical rainforest canopy, the tree crowns appear to be tightly snuggled together, filling every available square meter of space. In one sense they are, with no clear view to the ground far below the crowns. However if we go below this Malaysian rainforest canopy and look up (see DHJanzen100324.jpg below), we see that this is not strictly true.
