Selection then modifies the fluffy tips of the fruits into small barbed spears nicely positioned to penetrate fur (and even skin) and be carried by a passing mammal. This Bidens (Asteraceae) almost undoubtedly had a fluffy wind-dispersed fruit in its ancestry.
