| The first step is to cut the tree (in DHJanzen100102.jpg) off at its base with a single quick slice of a machete while the great bulk of the ants are still inside the thorns (because the colony has not been molested). If they had been out running excitedly all over the foliage, even the blow from a single slice would have knocked many off onto the ground, not all of which would have found their way back into the tree in time to be counted in the census. | ||
