Digging yet further reveals the entire structure - a waxy bag filled with a pollen and nectar brew, smelling all the world like yeast and fermenting beer or mead, which is exactly what it is. Easy guess is that these bees have been making beer for their larvae for many millions of years, long before we were even mouse-like primates beginning to take to the trees.
