This aspen grove in Montana is being harvested by a beaver colony down hill to the left, as evidenced by the stumps dotting the slope. Most of the work was done at night, as contemporary beaver are largely nocturnal animals in their activities outside the home (however, it is not clear if this basic biology or generated by many generations of being hunted - in areas with no human predators they are much more active in the daytime than in places where they are hunted and trapped).
