The incisors of a beaver are very long, and the lowers are thicker than the uppers. The lower incisors are used for both cutting and ripping (fibrous tree bark and wood, when cutting down a tree), while the uppers have a sharper edge and are used more for slicing thin pieces of bark off a twig being twirled while held in the front feet (see image DHJanzen100900.jpg below). The outer face of both upper and lower incisors is yellow, harder enamel tooth tissue, while the inner face and inner tooth is softer dentine and less enamel (see below).
