In the center of this photograph is a blackened wedge ending at the roadside. This wedge is the yellow grass on the right in image DHJanzen100806.jpg above, after it has been burned in the dry season. This is the Guacimal fire plot in 1985 immediately after the fire control program was begun, and the forest had not yet begun to invade the (then) abandoned pastures. To the left of the plot is an enormous expanse of grass that is today (2001) covered with young forest.
