The Mesa Santa Rosa in the middle of the ACG dry forest at the time that the forest restoration process began. This photograph is in the first half of the dry season when many trees have now dropped their leaves, and the jaragua grass is full yellow. These grasses are 1-2 m in height because the cattle have been removed. The large patch of secondary successional forest on the left, and the strips of forest crossing the pastures are based on rocky ravines where the vegetation is slightly more moist and there is less fuel (due to the rocks and due to the shade from the trees), so that the fires do not burn as thoroughly there. However, without cattle to keep the grass down, annual fires in this area are now hot enough and high enough (see below) to gradually remove all of this forest, thereby making it imperative that the area have an effective fire prevention program.
