But we can also do it by literally offering the loggers a better job as parataxonomists than as a logger. This young man, fresh out of 6th grade and wielding a chain saw in the forest in DHJanzen100077.jpg in the spring of 2000, is now raising caterpillars as a parataxonomist conducting the biodiversity inventory of that same forest. The job pays better, is more secure, a lot more interesting, offers much more personal freedom and opportunity for growth, and is a lot, lot safer. And it uses a different part of the body.
