The individual logs, of many species, are dragged into this central log yard at the end of a long thin road. Each log has its individual license number carved or painted into the end. The logs are barked. Removing the bark removes much of the part that is most edible to fungi and wood-boring insects (Cerambycidae, Buprestidae, Scolytidae, Curculionidae), thereby reducing their attacks on the log (which is really just so much food for decomposers) by drying it and by eliminating the most food-rich parts, and by removing the cover (bark) in which many deep wood decomposers get their start.
