In the abandoned guest house where I was staying on the forest edge, there was a framed cartoon on the wall, obviously drawn by some earlier inhabitatant. As the African Timber and Plywood Company (ATPC) story unfolded, this cartoon took on progressively more significance. The fellow in front is obviously the old boy British forester who has been there a very long time, teaching the names of the trees to the new boy British forester, just out from England. The significance of these names, and the teaching process, will become clear as we move ahead.
