Within 2 weeks, the plants seeded with large numbers of Rothschildia lebeau larvae are defoliated, and the larvae are then moved to other plants to continue their development. This kind of defoliation of large food plants does not generally occur in nature, but it does occur on a smaller scale when hapless caterpillars find themselves on heavily shaded plants (low leaf nutrient quality), or on plants with small crowns.
