But what if the female has eclosed in the few days before the rains have come, or right when the rainy season has started but the trees have not yet leafed out. This is a much hotter and drier time of year, much like the weather created under the clear plastic skylight in the roof of our house. Here the trees stand leafless behind Winnie, but in her hand she has a mating can with a male Rothschildia newly attracted to a newly eclosed female. The moth has to survive predators in this world just as much as it has to survive weeks later when all is shady and moist as in image DHJanzen100621.jpg above.
