And this is what a gmelina plantation looks like 6 years later. The tree trunks above are the gmelina, nearly ready to harvest. The 2-3 m tall understory is hundreds of species of rainforest tree saplings and understory species as well, ready to be released for upward growth with the cutting of the gmelina. In a commercial operation, the gmelina stumps are allowed to resprout and go through subsquent cutting cycles. In the ACG, the trees will be killed (whether harvested will depend on the market) and the young native forest allowed its upward development. The bottom line is that forest restoration/removal of old pastures is a very different process in dry forest and rainforest.
