One such drug from the drugstore in image DHJanzen100525.jpg above was this bar of soap that is rich in anti-fungal agents - it was the soap used daily by the hunters, and was in part responsible for their seeming good health. But what is the anti-fungal agent? Mercury, an ancient European cure for fungal diseases. I suspect that every time someone took a bath with this soap they paid with a few tenths of a gram of liver, so to speak. This is called brute force medicine on the frontier, and it is one more facet of the complex relationship of a globalized carnivorous society and bushmeat.
