The snare in DHJanzen100472.jpg above, with its cover of leaves stripped away to reveal the trap/toggle mechanism below. When the animal steps on the leaves, it pushes the sticks downward into the pit below. The movement down of the right end of the single cross stick releases a catch holding the wire that is attached to the springy sapling end. That end snaps upward, pulling the sliding loop of the snare closed around the foot of the animal. Its struggles just pull the wire loop yet more tightly shut. Even if not suspended into an awkward death, the animal is likely to die from the shock of being suspended and constrained (though the hunter hopes it does not die until he can arrive and kill it, for reasons to become clear below).
