| Henri Njoo, going on 80 years old, proudly shows off his new boat, still black from the charcoal where it was burned and gouged from a single log of a rainforest tree by its manufacturer on the right in DHJanzen100459.jpg above. Henri, the local highschool teacher, speaks four European languages (and who knows how many local languages), has traveled all over Europe, and is here firmly interdigitated with a time-honored component of his society that is rapidly dissolving into something else. The bush-meat trade is just one process in this inexorable dissolution. Note that he is backdropped by what appears to be natural rainforest, but as mentioned above, it is nearly as free of game animals (and see below for what these are) as if it were cleared to a polished agroscape. | ||
