Rats were certainly not the only rodent to feed on bamboo seed crops, and this Indian porcupine was right in there with the rest of the seed predators. However, with a reproductive rate of perhaps 1-2 offspring every several years, and occurring at quite low density anyway, porcupines would certainly not have been much of a threat to the bamboo seed crop - except to the occasional individual that might have seeded out of phase with the great bulk of the cohort.
