And bamboo seeds (from the plant in DHJanzen100403.jpg above) are, after all, just grass seeds. Just as are wheat, rice, barley, sorgum, corn, etc. These Phyllostachys bambusoides seeds are essential, each, a grain of rice. And you know how well defended are the seeds of rice, corn, wheat, etc. Yes, we do bake and boil grass seeds to render them more digestible, but compared to all the other poisonous seeds out there - like coffee and black beans - grass seeds are highly, highly edible. So, we have a plant that synchronously over large areas (under natural circumstances) produces enormous quantities of highly edible seeds - this is massive iteroparous satiation of seed predators.
