Cutting across a Nepenthes ampullaria leaf in one of the buckets in DHJanzen100388.jpg above reveals the detritus that has fallen into the rainwater, and presumably rotting into swampy nutrients just as occurs in the bromeliad aerial swamps. And, a pale white tadpole (larval frog) is perched on top of the litter under the water, presumably living off the algae and microbes in the swamp and doing its part in the overall breakdown of the plant parts falling into this microswamp.
