Close view of the leaves of Spanish moss, an epiphytic bromeliad. This plant appears to get its mineral nutrients from pure air, and indeed it does. There are small scales on the leaf surfaces that when the air is moist bend upward, and then when the air dries, bend back against the leaf surface, trapping dust beneath them. The minerals in this dust are then taken up directly through the leaf surface, just like the minerals from the swamp sliced open in image DHJanzen100378.jpg above.
