Let me begin with animals (in contrast with plants), and then leave them aside. Our defense against the incoming consumer is in very great part behavioral (though I do not mean to negate immune responses, which are a chemical defense as well, but of a very different sort from what is considered in this lecture). In this image we see a mosquito happily pentetrating my defenses (and note that I have not applied any external secondary compounds like OFF). In image DHJanzen100248.jpg below we see my defensive reaction. It is not chemical.
