Now that you are armed with an array of observations of aposematic colors, models, and mimics, where do zebras (Equus burchelli, Equidae) fit? Barcoded horses, black and white they are. Were they only around as fossils, and were the reconstructionist to bar code them, the derisive laughter would be deafening. But these are not fossils and they ARE black and white. Aposematic? Not the slightest evidence (despite the difficulty of training them to act like horses). Signalling? Yes. But what? Actually, the colors appears to be designed for signal overload. To whom?
