And predators DO indeed attack terrestrial turtles. That hard shell evolved against someone, and probably not mosquitoes. This Rhinoclemys is a survivor. The deep scars on his ventral side show that there are at least some predators with big teeth that are not deterred by the coral snake pattern, or did their work in the dark where it was not visible. No defense works all the time, everywhere.
