While the acacia-ant and the ant-acacia are clearly coevolved (that is to say, neither acquired its relevant traits in the absence of the selective effects of their impact on the other), there are a variety of other obligatory or facultative interactants with the ant-acacia that do not display coevolution with the ant-acacia or the acacia-ant. A brief look at three of these situations may help clarify what is evolution versus coevolution.
