The first question was whether, irrespective of the thorns and ants, the foliage of ant-acacias is edible (and desired) to the brocket deer. I selected a fine branch from a healthy tree (and ant-colony) and carefully picked off all ants and then cut each thorn in the middle so as to remove any sharp points. When this was offered to the deer, it eagerly bit each leaf off at its base and rapidly ate all leaves. In a single meal it would eat the leaves off of at least five such branches. Then I selected the same kind of branch and removed all the ants but left the thorns intact. That is what is in the image.
