Picking the rock-hard Crescentia alata fruit from the tree, and splitting it gives no clues. There is no sweet flavor, and the tiny seeds are buried in a mildly bitter pulp. And no matter how long you watch the fruits, they never ripen, and eventually just fall off the tree.
