Twelve months after the experiment was set up, a representative plant from the control plot is figured above. The 60 cm stump is between the bottom of the photograph and his left hand. There is about 1.5 - 2 m of growth on each plant, each is occupied by a large and healthy ant colony, and each would become reproductive by the end of the second year. This is what happens when the ant-acacia has maximal protection from acacia-ants.
