Forty-five days after the experiment was set up, in the rainy season, a representative acacia-ant in the control plot looked like the one above. It has numerous short sucker shoots and each has perfect leaves large green thorns. Many but certainly not all of the ant colony has moved into the thorns (packed with larvae), while the remainder is still in the thorns of the downed crown.
