Taking the lead from nature, and from my serendipituous discovery with the two stumps, I set up the obvious experiment. The beginning was in this 2 year-old secondary successional cornfield. The plants projecting above the general vegetation (about 2 m tall) are 2.5-3.5 m tall Acacia cornigera, each heavily occupied by a large healthy colony of Pseudomyrmex ferruginea. Plots containing about 25 such plants were selected in this area and marked off with string.
