Once the young sapling has a healthy young colony (100 to 1000 worker ants), it grows upward at a very high rate. This 4 m ant-acacia is only 1.5 years older than the plant in image DHJanzen100122.jpg, and was blessed with a healthy growing acacia-ant colony (Pseudomyrmex ferruginea). It has had the other secondary successional vegetation cleared away from around it for the purposes of the photograph, but it projected about 1.5 m above the general vegetation of the same age (in this young regeneration in an old corn field in Veracruz, Mexico).
