And then there is solufluction at high cold elevations. Below the tall Espeletia in image DHJanzen101209.jpg, the perennial plants are as low and protected by being beneath the soil as expected in any high elevation mountain or arctic ridge. This blueish patch is an ancient perennial, all of which except for its densely tomentose blueish green leaves, are underground - protection from the cold and the desiccation.
