Volcan Popocatapetl in central Mexico, 5,400 m in height, shows clearly the snowy crown, the grass-covered zone between the forest and the snow (a zone that slides up and down the mountain with the seasons and across years), and the species-rich forests below. While not as species-rich as the lowland rainforests of Mexico, none-the-less these intermediate-elevation forests rich in species of conifers, broad-leafed trees, shrubs, vines and herbs. There are probably as many species of plants in the sweep of this photograph as there are in all of Canada.
