And when food was plentiful, they responded to it as do pigs. This mother grizzly bear has five cubs - while she can produce enough milk for some of their development, if all five are to survive external subsidy in the form of a salmon run is necessary. But, the image of bears as being just northern, and even arctic/subarctic is deceptive - and mostly because humans have not come to occupy these northern areas as heavily as they did the southern areas. Bears once roamed across the southern 48, and when we had the Pleistocene herbivorous megafauna, there were at least two more species of very large bears throughout the southern US and Mexico preying on them.
