Not all the birds on Devon Island are perched at the top of a food chain based on lemmings, who are in turn based on the edible plants. This arctic bunting (Emberizidae), a migrant from southern Canada, is peering into the rocky cave where its nest holds the chicks below, chicks that are being fed with a mouthful of arctic midges (see below). But this IS a bird that will be heavily preyed upon by foxes, owls, skuas and weasels in the year of their population crash following and partly driving the lemming population crash.
