Each thorn is then broken open at its base (by pulling the thorn tips apart) and the brood contents dumped out into a container. In this particular thorn (and see following slide) there were larvae (white, ringed smaller), pupae (white, with legs and other parts visible), virgin queens readying to go out on a mating flight (large rust-colored ants with wings), workers (smaller rust-colored ants with no wings), and virgin males readying to go out on a mating flight(large blackish ants with wings).
